Thursday, Part II

This is the picture I referred to in the previous post, John and Nathan at the South entrance to the Forbidden City. The second picture shows the Hill of Accumulated Elegance (originally, the Hill of Accumulated Embroidery) at the North end of the City. This is an artificial rock structure built on the original site of the Hall of Appreciating Flowers. It's about 10 meters high and the Pavilion of Imperial Scenery stands at the top. Every year at the Double Ninth Festival, the emperors, empresses, and imperial concubines climbed the path to the top. There is a cave midway up. Further details, like what is the Double Ninth Festival, what happened when they reached the top, and how meters translate into feet were not provided on the sign outside.
